The SEEFIRE (South-East Europe Fibre Infrastructure for Research and Education) project has held a policy workshop, in Bucharest, Romania on Tuesday 17 January 2006.
The workshop focused on the strategic and economic benefits of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) owning and operating their own dark-fibre networks in southeast Europe.

The first SEEFIRE (South East Europe Fibre Infrastructure for Research and Education) workshop took place in Sofia, Bulgaria on 14 and 15 July 2005, opening the doors for the National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in the region to acquire dark fibre.

TERENA coordinates the SEEFIRE Project, a special support action benefiting from 350,000 euro funding from the European Commission. The project will build on the success of the SEEREN Project and prepare for the next generation of networks for research and education in southeast European countries.
